Maximising Event Impact with Social Media: 5 Golden Rules

Social media can make the difference between a good event and a great one. When used strategically, it builds buzz, helps your brand stand out in a crowded venue, and drives more traffic to your booth. Even a handful of well-timed, well-placed posts can significantly boost event success, and your business outcomes.
Maximising Event Impact with Social Media: 5 Golden Rules
The good news? It’s easier than you think. When we manage events for clients, we follow these five essential principles to amplify their reach and impact:

1- Join the conversation early
Every major event has a social media pulse especially in the weeks leading up to the show. Get involved early. Use the official event hashtag to share what you’re bringing to the table — whether it’s an exciting session, a must-see demo, or a giveaway. Tag the organisers too most are happy to reshare posts that boost event engagement (free exposure for you!).

2- Hashtags matter,  use them wisely
Hashtags = visibility. They make your content searchable and help group conversations across platforms. Always use the event hashtag, your company’s primary hashtag(s), and one keyword that connects to your campaign theme or solution focus. Keep it to three max, anything more and it gets noisy.

3- Be relevant, not random
It’s tempting to post just to “be seen” but your audience will scroll straight past if the content doesn’t speak to them. Share thought leadership, offer a clear reason to visit your stand, link to resources, or highlight customer success. Got a campaign live? Use event footfall to amplify it. And if you’re short on your own content, tap into the event’s app or platform, it’s often a goldmine of shareable updates.

4- Engage, don’t just post
It’s called social media for a reason. Don’t just broadcast reply, comment, repost, tag. The more interactive you are, the more visible you become. And don’t leave this all to your booth team, assign someone back at HQ to help monitor and respond in real-time. Keep the conversation flowing even if your hands are full of brochures and coffee cups.

5- Lights, camera, authenticity
Video content grabs attention. It also humanises your brand. Capture live footage from the show floor, interview attendees, share sneak peeks, or record your team in action. Even 15-second clips can make a big impact and they’re highly shareable. Bonus: that content can fuel your post-show engagement too.

Social media doesn’t have to be complicated but it does need to be intentional.

When done right, social media can supercharge your event presence. Plan ahead, engage meaningfully, and take advantage of every opportunity to connect with your audience online and in person.

With the right prep and the right people in place, it can be one of your strongest tools for making an impact before, during, and after the event.
