a  mid-year reflection

SIX THINGS THE FIRST SIX MONTHS OF THE YEAR HAS REMINDED ME ABOUT MARKETING
“Progress often looks like fewer things done better, not more things done quickly.”
Mid-year always feels like a useful pause point. Not for big predictions or sweeping statements but to take stock. To notice what’s changed, what’s stayed stubbornly the same, and what’s quietly become more important than we perhaps expected.

The first six months of this year haven’t been about shiny new ideas. They’ve been about fundamentals, judgement calls and learning to operate well in imperfect conditions.

Here are six things the first half of the year has reminded me about marketing.
1. Progress doesn’t always look loud

Some of the best marketing work I’ve seen this year hasn’t been the most visible.
It’s been the unglamorous stuff:
  • Fixing broken processes
  • Simplifying messaging
  • Aligning teams that weren’t quite pulling in the same direction
  • Getting the basics right consistently

There’s a temptation to equate momentum with constant activity. But in reality, progress often looks quieter fewer things done better, rather than more things done quickly.

This year has reinforced that steady often beats showy.

2. Clear thinking is becoming a differentiator

One of the biggest challenges I see teams facing isn’t a lack of ideas it’s too many of them.

There’s so much input:
  • Internal opinions
  • External noise
  • New tools, platforms and advice
  • Competing priorities

The teams that are coping best aren’t necessarily the biggest or best resourced. They’re the ones who’ve created space to think clearly, make deliberate decisions and stick with them long enough to see what actually works.

Clarity in strategy, roles and expectations is becoming a genuine competitive advantage.

3. Relationships matter more than ever

This sounds obvious, but it’s been particularly noticeable this year. When things feel uncertain, people rely on trust:
  • Trust in partners
  • Trust in teams
  • Trust built over time, not transactions

The strongest client relationships we have aren’t based on outputs alone. They’re built on honesty, challenge, shared context and mutual respect.

Marketing doesn’t happen in isolation it happens between people and when pressure is high, those relationships really show their value.

4. Confidence is quietly driving performance

Something that’s come up repeatedly in conversations is confidence or the lack of it. Not confidence in ability, but confidence in judgement.

Teams know what could be done, but they’re often second guessing:
  • Is this the right priority?
  • Should we wait?
  • What if this doesn’t work?

The teams making the most progress aren’t immune to doubt they’ve just learned how to move forward without perfect information. Confidence doesn’t mean certainty. It means being comfortable making informed decisions and adjusting when needed.

5. Leadership shows up in the small moments

This year has reinforced that leadership isn’t just about big strategy calls.

It’s visible in:
  • How decisions are communicated
  • How pressure is handled
  • Whether teams feel supported or scrutinised
  • Whether space is created for learning, not just delivery

In marketing especially, where work is often public and subjective, leadership tone matters hugely. The environments where people feel trusted tend to produce better thinking, better work and better outcomes.

6. Sustainability isn’t optional anymore
Not in a buzzword sense but in a very practical one.

The constant pace of change, combined with lean teams and high expectations, means that unsustainable ways of working catch up quickly.

More teams are asking sensible questions:
  • What can we realistically maintain?
  • What needs to change?
  • What’s worth protecting?

That feels like progress because sustainable marketing isn’t about slowing down it’s about building ways of working that don’t rely on constant urgency to function.
“Some of the best marketing progress I’ve seen this year hasn’t been loud,
it’s been thoughtful.”

Looking ahead to the second half of the year

If the first half of the year has taught me anything, it’s that success right now isn’t about doing everything.

It’s about:
  • Clear priorities
  • Strong relationships
  • Confident decision-making
  • Creating the conditions for people to do good work consistently

The second half of the year doesn’t need more noise. It needs sharper focus, better conversations and the confidence to stick with what matters.

Sometimes, that’s more than enough.

If you’re heading into the second half of the year feeling stretched, reactive or unsure where to focus next, you’re not alone and you don’t have to figure it out on your own.

We help marketing teams gain clarity, make confident decisions and build momentum around what really matters. If that would be useful, let’s start with a conversation.
